Pick n Mix Trips

Trips are organised by the Kāpiti CoastWEA committee for members and their friends, usually monthly between March andSeptember. Trips will visit places of interest or events somewhere around theWellington, Kāpiti Coast and Horowhenua regions. Normally this will involve using public transport and, for those eligible, Gold Cards. Occasionally private vehicles will be used. Registration prior to the trip is required. Trips are free except when events or tours involve an entrance or participant fee. If required, this will be advertised in advance (eg the 2025 visit to the World Press Photography Exhibition). Participants are responsible for themselves during the trips, which will be advertised in our weekly newsletters and on our website/Facebook pages.

Wellington Holocaust Centre

The Centre:

The trip is to the Wellington Holocaust Centre in Webb Street, Wellington. In addition to seeing through the Centre we will also be guided by Carol Calkoen whose parents set up the centre years ago and she will talk to us about their experience. This will be a general guided tour rather than focusing on any of the particular topics that I indicated earlier, however there will be plenty of time for interaction with Carol.

Travel arrangements:

We travel on 9:05 am train (ex Waikanae) and 9:11am (ex Paraparaumu) to Wellington. (Please sit in the rear carriage). We then travel by bus from Wellington Railway Station to a bus stop near the Centre. We plan to arrive at the centre by about 10:45am.

After time at the Centre there is time for lunch at a nearby cafe of your choice and cost before we catch a bus back to Wellington railway station and then by train home. The train will leave before 3pm.

If you are a gold card holder then all travel is free otherwise the usual fares will apply.

Trip Cost:

As this is a guided tour at the centre there is a Centre charge of $10.35 per person. Please pay that amount into the WEA bank account as follows, giving your name and Jewish trip as details so we can track the payment.

What to do next:

If you are coming you need to pay the $10.35 into the bank account by Tuesday 22 September and that will confirm your trip.

Please also bring photographic identification (e.g. passport, driver licence) as the centre needs that before entry for security reasons.

Wellington spring weather can be unsettled so dress for the day!
